Gibson ES-333 question
Hi guys,

I’ve been offered a Gibson ES-333 in a swap for my Clapton Strat and I really like the guitar but I haven’t had a chance to play it yet.

Can anyone tell me how the neck is? I’ve heard they’re thin but I can’t handle a super-thin neck.

I have a 333, and the neck is thinner, more like a 60’s neck.

I like it just fine, and it’s pretty much my number one!

he Clapton neck is a “V” shaped neck so it sits in your hand a bit differently than an ES-333 which has a basic “D” shaped neck. I have a Strat with a “C” shaped neck and there is a difference moving from the Strat to the ES-333 but, I have come to love the shape of the ES-333 neck. It has some girth as you move up the fret board toward the 15th fret and for someone with small fingers, I have an easier time and more comfort with the ES-333. The other thing for me is the neck binding with the nubs/nibs. I find this feature of many Gibson s a real plus in the comfort column.

The bottom line is that with the “V” neck, you really feel the carve in the palm of your hand where with the ES-333 “D” shape it is rather seamless. I played Starts and Tele’s from 1990 – 2004 and switched back to Gibson’s and have not looked back. The ES-333 is a wonderful guitar and great bang for the dollar. The sound capabilities of the ES-333 even with the stock 490T/498T combo is pretty limitless. I have put Classic 57’s in mine and can get any sound I desire. I would not hesitate to trade a Clapton Strat for any ES model…

Awesome. Thanks you guys for all your help. I think I’ll make the swap if I hear back from the guy.

333’s don’t come along every day anymore and are great guitars, excellent for modding.

Clapton > 333 is a fair deal IM

rlan and the carrot are correct. Do it and don’t look back. You can easily get another Clapton strat down the road, that model ain’t going anywhere.

The deal is in limbo right now but I definitely appreciate all the advice here guys. Thanks again. If I get the guitar I’ll be sure to do an NGD posting.
